there is a silver lining. Our ranking dropped (rose?) in the annual Congressional Quarterly Most Dangerous Cities list. Memphis Business Journal is light on statistics, but some poor anonymous staffer tried to transmute a press release into original prose by burying the list worst-of list: “St. Louis ranks second to Detroit in the dangerous cities ranking, followed by Flint, Mich., Oakland, Calif. and Camden, N.J.”

For the record: Earlier today, a post regarding Dr. Bret Sokoloff was deleted. The post was in poor taste on several accounts (we lost track at six), and it shouldn’t have been written in the first place. Particularly troubling was that this site was ranking highly in Google and Yahoo! searches, meaning this blog would appear to be a major source of definitive information on the subject.

It is not, nor is it a definitive source for any original information. If you would like such a source, I suggest local television or the Commercial Appeal. You can also find all sorts of commentary, ranging from the outrageous to the inane, in the comments sections on the relevant stories.

Also in the interest of full disclosure, this decision was made after we received a signifigant (well, 60-ish) number of hits and the following comment:

I think before you people start writing articles and publishing crap like this you might want to think about the effects this kind of stuff will have on his family. He is an outstanding doctor and cares for his patients and does his love his family. I have been a patient of his for a couple of years and owe him a lot and would trust him with my life, yesterday, today or tomorrow. Having been in the legal field for 24 years i have people have stranger things happen and they werent guilty. You people need to have some character and realize all articles like this are going to do are cause deeper hurt to all involved.

Old? Absolutely. But most of this stuff came up shortly before this blog was born, so you can deal with it:

Commercial Appeal: Man wrecks car, tries break-in, gets shot at, smashes restaurant window and that’s all just in the headline.
Smart City Memphis: “All The News That’s Fit To Rent” Prompts Controversy At Commercial Appeal though no one is quite sure why.
Memphis Flyer: “Monetizing Content” at The Commercial Appeal and being jealous of profit margins at the Memphis Flyer.
Oh, and they didn’t hire me.

Baggage handling

This isn’t verified or anything, but we’ve come across reports that baggage at Memphis International Airport is literally being decimated. That’s kind of un-reassuring for the largest cargo airport in the world, because generally speaking people like their luggage in one piece. Who knows, maybe it’s a new security policy to make sure terrorists don’t ship ninjas via luggage. Or maybe that’s just what happens when you don’t pay your machinists.
